The area around Furore is one of the most charming and scenic coastal sections of the Amalfitana.
The fascinating Furore-Fjord is the only one of its kind in the Mediterranean area and forms the wild-romantic setting of many Italian films.
It is a unique landscape that opens up between Positano and Amalfi: an arm of the sea bordered by rough high-rising limestone rock faces stretches into a deep valley. The holiday apartments and B&Bs we arrange for in the area are found in charming locations.
The famous Furore-Fjord is the only one of its kind in the Mediterranean area and forms the wild-romantic setting of many Italian films. Roberto Rossellini, for example, shot two films there starring Anna Magnani, one of them the classic „Amore“. A small museum in one of the small cubic houses nestling against the rocks bears reminders of these two stars' sojourn.
Should you be driving along coastal road SS163 during your holidays at the Amalfi Coast, you can take a look at the gorge – at a height of 30 meters, the fjord is spanned by a bridge. You cannot but wonder at the houses clinging to the lime rock faces and admire the unique landscape formed by the mountain torrent Schiato.
This depression in the landscape was quite naturally used by the locals as a natural harbor and for quite a while, as of the early Middle Ages, the fjord was a trans-shipment point for all kinds of goods. The waters of the Schiato were the means of driving the paper and flour mills – today, a small „Ecomuseo“ in an old paper mill reminds you of this nearly forgotten handicraft.
Enjoy fantastic holidays at a holiday apartment or a B&B at Furore. Small stepped paths take you from the fjord to the higher village districts. The Costiera Amalfitana shows its most beautiful face there, too: scattered houses nestling against the mountain slopes, surrounded by charming lemon and vine terraces.
Furore calls itself a „paese dipinto“, a painted village – for several years, the coastal town has been inviting artists to perpetuate their works of art on house and supporting walls. Those who venture into those higher districts of Furore are rewarded with spectacular panoramic views of the coast.
