For several years now the town of Conca dei Marini has been considered a hot tip. It is said to be idyllic and peaceful there. Somewhat off the tourists’ tracks along the coast. Simply – charming.
It was the irresistible charm of the „Conchesi“, the inhabitants of Conca, which Sergio, the owner, could not resist either. Within two years, he built Casa del Cavallo, an idyllic and charming refuge, which is so unique that you can imagine it only at Conca dei Marini and nowhere else.
In this place at the „Amalfitana“, a narrow ridge juts far out into the sea. Winding roads hug the rocky, steep coast. A few more turns and there we are – in Sergio’s paradise, which a small pool (4x2m) with a view of Capri has been added to and has thus become even more enchanting.
We pass through an old wooden door onto the premises; they are named for a gorgeous black horse which used to graze below the house. The owner was so fascinated by its beauty and elegance that he decided to call the villa Casa del Cavallo – House of the Horse.
We see a long terrace surrounded by lush green, Mediterranean flora and focusing on one view: that of the sparkling blue sea. Appealing white chairs are arranged around a solid wooden table. We can actually feel the dolce vita, the joy of life, which fills this place.
Sergio, by profession designing fashion and not drawing construction plans, has lived out his enormous creative power inside the house, too. By putting a lot of work and passion, his heart and soul into restoring the three floors of the run-down former farmhouse he has succeeded in creating a unique and appealing atmosphere which clearly bears his signature of style.
Upon entering, we find ourselves in the long living room with cozy seating areas, TV and appealing antique furniture. A small bathroom with shower, WC and bidet lies hidden behind a recess with sofa.
A few steps up, through an arched doorway and we have reached the dining area of Casa del Cavallo. It is dominated by a long, heavy wooden table, the kind of table also found on the terrace, which is accessible from this room. The antique tiles adorning the fireplace used to be found at local Monastero Santa Rosa, which was abandoned many years ago and finally redesigned for touristic purposes.
Passing through another arched doorway we enter the kitchen. The shelves are stacked with Vietri ceramics. Then there is a refrigerator with freezer compartment, a gas stove with oven, a dish washer and a small coffee machine.
We climb a red staircase to the first floor of Casa del Cavallo, which includes two bedrooms, a double and a twin. The view of the sea from these two rooms is adorable. There is also an elegant bathroom with bathtub, WC and bidet on this floor.
On our way up, we walk towards an enormous bookcase. We have arrived in Sergio’s studio. From the high cupola ceiling our gaze wanders out through the large windows onto the seemingly unlimited sea.
From the studio we step outside, onto the roof terrace; its floor is covered with antique 18th century maiolica tiles from the Giustiniani ceramics manufactory, tiles which once covered the floor of an old church at Amalfi. While our eyes follow the graceful coastal formation, the day slowly draws to a close.
Our tour of Casa del Cavallo comes to an end in the third and last bedroom of the house. Its French window opens upon a terrific view of the sea. A narrow bathroom with shower is found behind the double bed. Through a wooden door at the far end of the room you can step right out in front of the house. It is a relic from times gone by, when a horse was kept in this room.
What do you do when you are required to stay at home, as was the case during the lockdown in 2020? The owner of Casa del Cavallo decided to make himself as comfortable as possible and to add a small, 4x2m pool to his holiday home. The pool is found on the spacious terraced premises stretching out below the holiday home and offers a view not only across the deep blue sea but as far as Capri, the isle of ‘longing’.
Apart from the pool, the redesigned premises also include a vegetable garden. From what is growing there, guests staying at Casa del Cavallo may and should pick and savor anything their hearts and stomachs desire.
Furnishing of Casa del Cavallo includes: washing machine, gas heating, fireside (dining room), air conditioning, children’s cot, grill and WiFi.
Parking is possible in front of the house, which is located at the end of a cul-de-sac (serpentine road). What may be more convenient, however, is the roofed parking space at the beginning of the access road, ca. 300 m from the house, which can be reserved for a fee. Please mind that available parking in front of the house cannot be guaranteed, as this does not explicitly belong to the house.
Grocery stores, bars and restaurants are about 700 m from Casa del Cavallo. SITA busses head for Conca dei Marini, as well as for the towns of Amalfi, Positano, Ravello and Sorrento. The bus stop is about 500 m off.
From Monday to Saturday, restaurant Le Bontà del Capo, which is only a short walk from the holiday home, offers a Lemon Tour, a tour which offers a culinary insight into your holiday region. In pairs or in small groups you first harvest lemons and produce your own limoncello. Then Fiorenzo Oliveto, who offers the tour, serves a delicious three-course menu based on lemons.
The nearest beach is about 1.5 km off.
The nearest train station is at Sorrento (ca. 29 km).
