Casa Vecchia, the „old house“, bears its name with reason and with dignity. The apartment in Albori belongs to a well-known family of intellectuals and was, up to recently, used only privately.
“Se voi sapeste quante storie potrebbe raccontare questa casa” – “If you knew how many stories this house could tell”: It was with these words that the friendly caretaker of Casa Vecchia welcomed us. And we surely wanted to hear those stories.
The house dates from the 17th century. It is located amidst the car-free terraced alleys of Albori’s “centro storico” (Amalfi coast, Southern Italy).
Typical cupola ceilings, up to 3.50 m in height, original flooring, numerous pieces of antique furniture and a great number of books tell a better story of the house’s history than words ever can.
At Casa Vecchia you do not only dive into a fascinating past. Here, you can pass real “vacanze mediterranee” and enjoy outdoor life to the full.
The terrace running the length of the house is greened with rich potted plants, the deep blue sea lies at your feet.
Part of the terrace is roofed. A beautiful mosaic table and seating accommodation promise a pleasant time dining together.
Deck chairs in the rear part of the sea view terrace invite you to take a sunbath or to delve into your holiday reading.
The apartment is located on the first floor. The hillside location, however, provides level access to Casa Vecchia.
The tasteful entry area lets you into the living-cum-dining room. Its 17th century flooring, woodstove and fine furnishing make for an elegant and at the same time cosy atmosphere. The French balcony facing the piazzetta and the door opening onto the terrace make for a bright and friendly room.
Casa Vecchia has three bedrooms, two of which can be used as a reading and an additional living room. These three rooms provide a view of the sea and access of the terrace.
The double bedroom achieves its effect not least due to its set of book shelves and the writing table.
Sleeping accommodation for a possible fifth person is provided with the sofa bed in the reading room.
The bathroom is equipped with a bathtub (with shower partition), bidet, WC and a washing machine.
The living room with its two sofa beds and beautiful writing table offers an en suite bathroom with washbasin and WC.
The eat-in kitchen with its high cupola ceiling, its original 18th century tiles, its showcase and its French balcony facing the piazza may be small, but it is charming. Of course, it provides all the equipment you need to prepare your holiday meals.
Get to know the original, rural face of the Amalfi coast during your stay at Albori.
In the terraced alleys of the picturesque “centro storico” time moves at a slower pace.
The inhabitants know and greet each other, they walk through the alleys and archways without hurry. Clotheslines are tied between your own window and your neighbour’s across the alley, fragrant basil is grown in pots in front of the doors, small statues of the Virgin Mary are lovingly decorated and children are quite naturally picked up from school by their “nonno”, their grandfather.
Here, amid local everyday life, the observant traveller will, by and by, gain some insight into the soul of “Bella Italia”.
Within less than 100 m you reach little grocery stores, café bars and a restaurant. Casa Vecchia is located only about 3 km from the nearest sandy beach, which you reach on foot by means of a stairway path. For the way back we recommend using the well-organized means of public transportation. Please note that the last bus to Albori runs at ca. 8 pm.
Because Casa Vecchia is situated in the stairway alleays of Albori, you cannot drive all the way to your holiday apartment. Parking spots are found along the road around the historic village centre.
